About Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that affects hemoglobin, the molecule in red blood cells that delivers oxygen throughout the body. It’s most common among individuals of African descent. In the United States, about one in 365 African American births results in a child with sickle cell disease.
People with SCD have red blood cells that become hard, sticky, and sickle-shaped. These sickle-shaped cells can block blood flow and cause severe pain, infections, and other serious health problems. Awareness and early detection are crucial in managing sickle cell disease.
Newborn screening programs can identify SCD early, allowing for timely interventions that can significantly improve quality of life and reduce complications. Regular check-ups and appropriate treatment plans are essential for managing symptoms and preventing crises.
