Embarking on a career in medicine can be challenging. That’s why we established a mentorship program designed to guide, support, and empower the next generation of minority physicians in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

We believe in the transformative power of mentorship. By connecting students with experienced mentors who understand their unique experiences and challenges, we’re creating a nurturing environment that fosters professional growth, resilience, and excellence.

About Mentorship

For young physicians of color, mentorship is invaluable. Having someone in your corner who understands your journey, has walked a similar path, and offers a safe space for questions and support can make all the difference — and that’s what our members are committed to. We’ve all learned from those who came before us, and we’re passionate about providing that opportunity for the next generation.

Benefits of Mentorship

Mentors offer personalized advice, share their own experiences, and help navigate the complexities of medical education and professional development. This relationship fosters confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging, which are crucial for overcoming the unique challenges these students may face.

Mentors also open doors to networking opportunities, resources, and career advancement — ultimately contributing to a more diverse and inclusive healthcare workforce.

Local Medical School Partnerships

We work closely with a variety of medical schools in the DFW area, including UT Southwestern Medical Center, Burnett School of Medicine at Texas Christian University, and Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for medical students from underrepresented minority groups to connect with mentors.

Becoming a Mentor

Members of the C.V. Roman Medical Society are eligible to become mentors. As a mentor, you’ll undergo a brief training to set expectations for a successful mentorship relationship before being matched with a student based on their educational background, specialty interests, experiences, and more.

Each mentorship relationship is defined by the mentor and mentee. However, we encourage mentors and mentees to meet at least once per quarter, either in person or virtually. These regular meetings help to establish long-term relationships and provide ongoing support as mentees navigate their careers in medicine.
